Flies in the House: Identify the Source Before You Treat
Swatting flies one by one rarely solves a recurring indoor problem. The more useful question is where they are entering or breeding. Observe their size, where they gather and whether you see them around food, bins, windows or drains.
Check food and waste first
Empty kitchen and outdoor bins, wipe lids, rinse recycling and inspect produce. A forgotten onion or spilled liquid behind an appliance can keep attracting flies after the counter looks clean. Store food in closed containers and keep screens in good repair.
Investigate drains and moisture
Small flies gathering near a sink or floor drain may point to organic buildup or persistent dampness. Clean the area using appropriate methods and address leaks. Avoid pouring different cleaning chemicals together. If activity is concentrated in one drain despite regular cleaning, a plumber or pest technician may help locate the underlying source.
Look for entry points
Inspect door sweeps, window screens and gaps around frequently opened doors. In restaurants and other food businesses, note when flies appear and which areas are affected so the source can be traced without interrupting food handling.
Know when to call
Repeated indoor activity, many flies emerging at once, or a source you cannot safely access merits a closer inspection. Treatment should follow identification of the fly and the breeding or entry site. See our fly control service and pest control for Caledon and Sutton.
