Mosquitoes Around Your Yard: A Standing-Water Checklist
Mosquitoes can make a deck or cottage yard hard to enjoy, especially after rain. Water held in small containers can give them places to breed. Walking the property once a week is a practical way to reduce those opportunities.
Start with overlooked containers
Check flowerpot saucers, buckets, toys, watering cans, tarps, wheelbarrows and unused planters. Empty them, turn them over or store them under cover. Clean clogged gutters where safe to do so, and replace water in birdbaths regularly. If you have a pond or drainage issue, ask a qualified professional about suitable maintenance rather than adding chemicals on your own.
Look at the yard after rain
Walk the yard a day after a storm. Notice puddles that remain and low spots near patios, sheds and play areas. Keep drainage clear and correct recurring pooling where possible. Screened doors and repaired window screens also help keep mosquitoes out of the house.
Protect people outdoors
Follow the label on any personal repellent you use, especially for children. Long sleeves and light clothing may help during peak activity. If you are planning an outdoor gathering, inspect the space beforehand so guests are not sitting beside containers of stagnant water.
When a property needs more help
Persistent activity can be difficult on larger lots or near natural water. A property assessment can identify what is manageable on site and what is outside your control. Learn about our mosquito control service. For lakeside properties, see our Georgina and Jackson’s Point service pages.
